The bass, Julian Close studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Robert Alderson, after gaining a bachelors degree and doctorate as an Applied Physicist from the University of Leeds.

His operatic roles have included: Dolokhov, Davout and Belliard (cover) in War and Peace, Father Truelove (cover) in Rake's Progress, Count Horn (cover) in Masked Ball and Supreme Pontiff in La Vestale for English National Opera.  For Buxton Festival he covered Prince Boland in Schubert's Fierrabras and sang the role of Basilio in Barber of Seville for Clonter Opera.  During 2002 he also sang the roles of Fafner, Hagen and the cover of Hunding in Der Ring des Nibelungen for Longborough Festival Opera and covered the role of Fafner in Siegfried for Scottish Opera and sang the role of Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Sparafucile in Rigoletto for Wexford Festival Opera.

During 2003 and 2004 he covered Fafner and Hagen in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Sarastro in Magic Flute and King of Egpyt in Aida for Scottish Opera.  Also for Scottish Opera he sang the role of Hagen on stage in a Gotterdammerung UnWrap Session, conducted by Richard Armstrong.  He also sang Hagen and Fafner with the Mastersingers Orchestra, conducted by Tony Legge.  He also sang as soloist in the Northern Ballet Theatre's Requiem conducted by John Price Jones in 2003.  He also recently sang Bonze in Madame Butterfly for Opera Project.

Scottish Opera have also invited Julian to participate in an education project on the opera Gotterdammerung in January 2004 and he will sing Fafner for Longborough Festival Opera in the summer, conducted by Anthony Negus and with the Edinburgh Opera Players in the Autumn, conducted by Michael Thorne.

Julian has just been awarded 2nd Prize of the Senior Wagner Society Competition 2003.

Future engagements the cover of Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos for Welsh National Opera and the role of Ramphis in Aida for Lyric Opera Productions in 2004.
