The bass James Gower was
born in Newport, South Wales. He read music and was a choral scholar at
St John's College, Cambridge before gaining a scholarship to study singing with
Mark Wildman and Jonathan Papp at the Royal Academy of Music.
While at the Academy his roles have included Seneca in L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Pistola in Falstaff, L'Arbre in L'Enfant et les Sortileges, Security Guard in Das Wundertheater (Henze) and Commendatore in Don Giovanni. On the professional stage his roles include Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata for Grange Park Opera, Monk in Don Carlos for Stowe Opera, Horaste in Troilus and Cressida in Birmingham and the Royal Festival Hall, Nym in Sir John in Love with the Northern Sinfonia and Raleigh in Gloriana for St Endellion Festival conducted by Sir Richard Hickox. He also made his German debut singing in Israel in Egypt in the Dortmund Konzerthaus in 2004.
During 2003 he covered Neptune in Idomeneo and Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, as well as singing the role of Sun in ENO's Education Project opera Firestone by John Browne. During 2004 he sang the role of Pinellino in Gianni Schicchi for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
He is currently singing the roles of 1st Priest/2nd Armed Man in Magic Flute and Doctor in Pelleas and Melisande for Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Future engagements include singing Colline in La Boheme for Opera Theatre Company.
