Michael Hunt read Chemistry at Liverpool University, where he started directing plays and operas. Michael is currently Artistic Director of Co-Opera, the mid-scale touring company in Ireland and Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal in Waterford. Under his leadership, Co-Opera has developed a national reputation for stimulating and innovative productions including tours of La Traviata, Carmen, La Boheme, Cosi fan tutte and Die Fledermaus.
He was a Staff Director at English National Opera for four years and directed revivals of Fidelio, Julius Caesar, Orpheus in the Underworld, La Traviata, Rusalka and the Rape of Lucretia. Michael has directed his own productions for many companies including Opera North (Oedipus Rex); Scottish Opera (Oedipus Rex and Iolanthe); Las Palmas (Tancredi, Carmen); Bilboa (Barber of Seville and La Boheme); and Cheltenham, Harrogate, Kensington and Bloomsbury Festivals.
For Raymond Gubbay he directed the Centenary Production of Puccini's La Boheme at the Royal Albert Hall.
Recently Michael made his North American debut with The Pearl Fishers in Portland, Oregon. Future plans include Rigoletto for Co-Opera and Madama Butterfly on tour in France. Michael is also Director of Productions for Opera 2005 and will direct The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville for the company.
